Brass buttons were first used as identification tags in the Napoleons army. Only the brass buttons had the units identification number stamped on it the rest of the uniform was unified.[1]

George Washington and his supporters wore the first political buttons during the first presidential inauguration in New York. They were not exactly like the buttons we know today; instead of metal pins these campaign buttons were real brass buttons sewn on to coats.[2]
